THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT. I WANTED TO GIVE THIS MAYOR AND THE COUNCIL CREDIT FOR WHAT THEY HAVE DONE FOR THE CITY. I DO KNOW THE MAYOR HAS DONE SOME THINGS FOR THE COMMUNITY IN DIFFERENT AREAS. AND TO SHE TOOK MY ADVISE WHEN I ALERTED HER ON THE AMOUNT OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN CITRONELLE. SHE TOOK THE BALL AND RAN WITH IT. SHE HAD NO SYSTEM FOR REPORTING THESE INCIDENTS TO HER. NOW I DON'T AGREE WITH THE DECISIONS SHE HAS MADE LATELY. BUT NOW IT SEEMS LIKE THE POLICE DEPT IS FALLING APART. THE CRIME IS UP. LIKE TONIGHT ONLY ONE OFFICER IS ON AND HE HAS BEEN RUNNING ANSWERING CALLS. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON ALL DAY. THEY DON'T HAVE MUCH TIME TO PATROL THE STREETS. THEY HAVE SUCH A BIG AREA TO WATCH WHEN THEY DO.. ALL THE PORTABLE RADIOS ARE BREAKING DOWN SO PEOPLE TELL ME. THE COUNCIL VOTED TO PURCHASE CELL PHONES RATHER THAN THE PORTABLES. THEY MAY WORK FINE FOR OPERATIONS BUT THEY NEED TIGHT SECURITY BUT NORMAL OPERATIONS NO!!. NO CROSS AGENCY COMMUNICATIONS OR EVENT CHANNELS. YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT THE CHIEF OF POLICE DOING THE HIRING. THE ONLY THING, I BELIEVE THAT OUR CHIEF IS READY FOR RETIREMENT. HE IS SET IN HIS WAYS AND MAY NOT BE STANDING UP FOR HIS OFFICERS OR TO THE MAYOR LIKE HE SHOULD. I KNOW YOU HAVE NOTICED THIS, THE POLICE DEPT. HAS ALWAYS PLAYED SECOND FIDDLE TO EVERYTHING. BUT LATELY NO FIDDLE AT ALL. SOME OF THE PATROL CARS LOOK LIKE THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED. I SHUDDER TO THINK WHAT THEY MAY PURCHASE FOR THE REPLACEMENT, SCOOTERS.

I read a lot of stuff about the police department and am astounded at the misinformation being posted. Facts: The population and crime is growing and the police the department is shrinking-all public record. As far as hiring good officers. Who is more qualified to hire them? A Chief with 30 plus years experience, an Assistant Chief with almost 20 years experience or a mayor without an ounce of knowledge about law enforcement. Why have a Chief if the mayor is going to run the department and order the Chief what to do without his input? Mr Williams i read your article this week and you might be on the right track. Ask the right people the right questions and your eyes will be opened.

THIS NOTE IS TO EXPLAIN WHY I SEEM INVOLVED IN OUR POLICE DEPT. BEFORE I MOVED HERE I WAS THE LEADER OF A CIVIC GROUP IN IN THE URBUN AREAS OF THE THE CITY. WE WORKED CLOSELY WITH THE POLICE DEPT. DURING A POPULATION SHIFT WITHIN THE CITY WE LOST MEMBERS OF THE POLICE DEPT. DUE TO THE CITY'S ADMINISTRATION CHANGES OUR GROUP HAD TO WORK MUCH HARDER. THIS IS WHY I GET SO JUMPPY WHEN OUR POLICE DEPT. GETS WITHOUT ENOUGH OFFICERS. WITH THIS EXPERIENCE I CAN RECOGNIZE GOOD PERFORMANCE BY MOST ANY OFFICER AND I LIKE TO WRITE ABOUT ANY OUTSTANDING POLICE WORK.

I'VE LIVED HERE ABOUT 20 YEARS AND ENJOYED EVER DAY OF IT.ALL THIS TIME SOMETHING HAS BEEN MISSING. THERE NEVER HAS BEEN A PLACE IN CITRONELLE FOR GOOD CLEAN FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT FOR ALL GROUPS AND AGES. IT COULD BE A PLACE FOR OUR YOUNG PEOPLE TO HANG OUT RATHER THAN HANGING OUT IN DIRT PITS AND PARKING LOTS. IF THERE IS NO ENTERPRISING PERSON IN CITRONELLE THAT WILL TAKE ON SOMETHING LIKE THIS MAYBE THE CITY OF CITRONELLE COULD. IT WOULD BE A GREAT WAY TO GENERATE REVENUE FOR THE CITY. I THINK YOU CAN FIND SOME CITIES HAVE THIS. IT SHOULD HAVE A CARNIVAL ATMOSPHERE, WITH ENTERTAINMENT ITEMS LIKE PUT PUT GOLF, BATTING CAGES,ARCHERY OR HORSE SHOES. ALL THIS COULD BE DESIGNED LIKE THE MIDWAY AT THE FAIR.

I'm sick of reading about all the police stuff. I want to know what can be done about businesses in town that are filthy? The floors at the Family Dollar store a so nasty I don't think they ever get swept or mopped. You better not let your children go in there without shoes. The shelves are a wreck and never stocked, SOME of the employees don't take any pride in themselves and they dress sloppy. I've been in there when employees were eating at the register, standing around talking and I've even had to walk past some of the employees smoking in the doorway. I thought this was against city policy? The sidewalks are always full of trash and the parking lot has no lighting. The potholes are as large as craters and there's no parking places striped. People even park at the door and that's supposed to be a fire lane. Clean your act up and you might get some business!!

L.E. Williams you seem very involved in this police department. But I will tell you this. You are wrong about your mayor. I agree she needs to hire good police officers but not ones that fit her agenda. If they don't, she finds a way to get rid of them. I hear she is trying to force another good cop out of here and wants the Chief to leave so she can put a chief in that will obey what she wants. Mr. Williams, I always read what u write and agree most of the time. But this time you are wrong. Quit listening to the mayor and get the real facts

PART ONE IN OUR CITIES TODAY SOME POLICE OFFICERS STRIVE TO OBTAIN ADVANCED EDUCATION IN POLICE WORK. THIS ADVANCES AN OFFICER'S RESUME TO DIFFERENT LEVELS OF QUALIFICATION. THERE ARE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF STANDARDS IN ADVANCED LAW ENFORCEMENT EDUCATION. KEEP IN MIND YOU SHOULD DURING A HIRING PROCESS LOOK AT ALL RESUMES BECAUSE THERE ARE MANY POLICE OFFICERS THAT CANNOT AFFORD THIS ADVANCED EDUCATION. THE MAIN REASON THESE MEN AND WOMEN DON'T HAVE THIS KNOWLEDGE IS BECAUSE IT IS NOT OFFERED IN ACADEMIES TODAY , ONLY BASIC LAW WHICH INCLUDES BASIC ETHICL STANDARDS. THIS IS THE STANDARDS I WAS REFERING TO. SO THERE IS GOOD STANDARDS WITHIN THESE BASIS STANDARDS I MENTIONED AND YOUR GOALS STILL REMAINS HIGH. PART TWO NEVER SHOULD THE CITY PUT A POLICE UNIFORM ON JUST ANY MAN OR WOMAN FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS. IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA THE ONLY GOVERNMENT OFFICAL, THE POLICE OFFICER WHO HAS THE DIRECT POWER AND IMMEDIATE ACCESS TO REGULARLY DEPRIVE A CITIZEN OF THEIR LIBERTIES. THIS IS WHY A POLICE OFFICER SHOULD HAVE A GOOD KNOWEDGE OF THE PRINCIPLES OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE, THE U S CONSTITUTION AND ITS BILL OF RIGHTS. PART THREE AFTER GETTING BEATUP REALY BAD I HOPE THIS EXPLAINS THE POINT I WAS TRYING TO GET ACROSS. I HAD ANOTHER PAGE I TRIED TO CUT AND PASTE TO THE CALL'S TEXT BOX BEFORE I GOT BEATUP. I GUESS IT WAS TOO LARGE FOR THE TEXT BOX AND I LOST IT. PS BY THE WAY, I THINK OUR MAYOR IS A GOOD LEADER .

I can't believe someone has the nerve to say the mayor or anyone else has set their standards too high!! When you don't set high goals or standards then you become complacent and you don't care. When a community stops caring it goes to pot. I do not want my children, grandchildren or any other relative or citizen protected by a man or woman who has been given a gun and their qualifications are below standards. In the past, our police department hired people who never went to the police academy and had no experience. One man's only experience was a cook at Ihop. We teach our kids to set high goals and reach for the stars. Why should we expect less from city employees? STOP HAVING THE "WE'RE LITTLE OLE CITRONELLE" ATTITUDE!! We want the best and deserve the BEST!! THANK YOU MAYOR FOR STRIVING FOR BETTER EMPLOYEES!!

READERS, YOU KNOW I HAVE WRITTEN SEVERAL LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ABOUT THE CITRONELLE POLICE DEPT. IT GOT SOME RESULTS BUT AS FAR AS HIRING NEW OFFICERS, NO. I'VI TALKED TO THE MAYOR ABOUT IT BUT SHE HAS PUT SUCH HIGH STANDARDS ON PEOPLE WHO SHE HIRES AND IT SEEMS NONE FITS HER STANDARD SHE HAS HIRED ONE I THINK, MAYBE THE EDITOR CAN FIND OUT.NOW FROM MY MEANS OF KEEPING UP WITH THE PD IT SEEMS THAT THEY ARE WORKED TO LEVELS UNHEARD OF IN GOOD MANAGEMENT THEY DO A GOOD JOB BUT THEY ARE NOT AT THEIR BEST

I think Citronelle needs to hire more law enforcement officers. I see the same three officers working everytime I go out. Where are the other officers at? These officers have families too. they cant spend every waking moment working and because other officers don't want to come out and work.

Hi Everyone, I collect old drink bottles. Anybody have any in your barn, shed, etc. I heard E.G. Bradley had a bottling works in Citronelle around turn of the century. I'd really like to find one of those, but I collect any kinds of bottles, but favor ones from Prichard and Mobile.

Barry, On your column about separating rumors from the truth, I was really agreeing with you on most everything you were commenting about, that is until you referred to the Tea Party as mobs. The word mob does not seem complimentary to me. It refers to a group of people that are out of control. In the column, you stated that a good columnist needs to not only get his facts straight but also not use his column to poke someone in the eye. Well, that is exactly what you did. Maybe next time, someone should proof read your column before printing time as to not offend a huge growing population that believes in the values of the Tea Party.

THE LAW IS THE LAW! So "if" the US government determines that it is against the Law for the words "under God" to be on our money, then, So be it. And "if" that same government decides that the "Ten Commandments" are not to be used in or on a government installation, then, so be it. I say, "so be it," because I would like to be a law abiding US citizen. I say, "so be it," because I would like to think that smarter people than I are in positions to make good decisions. I would like to think that those people have the American public's best interests at heart. Since we can't pray to God, can't Trust in God and cannot post His Commandments in Government buildings, I don't believe the Government and its employees should participate in the Easter and Christmas celebrations which honor the God that our government is eliminating from many facets of American life. I'd like my mail delivered on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter. After all, it's just another day. I'd like the " US Supreme Court to be in session on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter as well as Sundays." After all, it's just another day. I'd like the Senate and the House of Representatives To not have to worry about getting home for the "Christmas Break." After all it's just another day. I'm thinking that a lot of my taxpayer dollars could be saved, if all government offices & services would work on Christmas, Good Friday & Easter.. It shouldn't cost any overtime since those would be just like any other day of the week to a government that is trying to be "politically correct." If this idea gets to enough people, maybe our elected officials will stop giving in to the "minority opinions" and begin, once again, to represent the "majority" of ALL of the American people. SO BE IT.......... Please Dear Lord, Give us the help needed to keep you in our country! 'Amen' and 'Amen'

I'M SURPRISED AT OUR CHIEF OF POLICE WHY HE HASN'T BROUGHT THE MATTER OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE B/4 THE CITY COUNCIL. I DON'T THINK THEY HAD THE INFORMATION. THERE IS RECORDS PROVING THAT THE VIOLENCE IS GETTING WORSE. IT'S NOT ONLY AT HESTER DRIVE IT'S ALL OVER TOWN. NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT IT EXCEPT THE POLICE DEPT AND THE PEACEFUL CITIZENS NEAR BY.

To the lady who parked in the driveway of the Marketplace and let her child urinate-that's trashy. There were plenty of restrooms in the shopping center. Everyone who drove through there saw what you were doing. Where's your decency?

I would like to know at what point does a citizen have rights? The apartments on Hester Drive (S&S Luxury Apartments)have become a danger to the community. There are fights over there weekly, people hollering and cussing, loud music all hours of the day and night. What once was a nice quiet neighborhood has turned into danger alley. What will be next shootings, killing, robberies?Do we sit back or do we fight for our peace and quiet again? Will our council and mayor hear our plead for help? In closing I would like to thank the police dept. for trying to help as much as possible but when you only have one officer working most night and weekends, it's hard to protect a whole town on your own.

I wish businesses who allow their employees to smoke at the front door would make them stop. I am allergic to cigarette smoke and it aggravates my asthma when I come in contact with it. I don't think it's right for people to smoke right in the doorway. Go out in the parking lot so peple won't have to breath it. You're being dissrespectful and endangering the public.

I watch Citronelle council meetings online when I can. The one thing I don't understand is what they are talking about. When they get to the regular part of the meeting they vote on things without telling people what they are voting on. They act like they've discussed things before hand. Isn't it illegal to discuss city business outside the regular council meeting? I don't understand the Sun Shine law but I believe all city business MUST be discussed in public.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to clean up ditches, drains and street corners. However, the infrastructure (the basic physical and organizational structures needed for the operation of a city) is falling by the wayside. Stop micromanaging the city and do what's right!

YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT THE MISCONCEPTION. THE CIVIC CENTER WE ARE LOOKING AT HAS ONE BIG ROOM WITH SMALLER STORAGE ROOMS. THE ONE BIG ROOM HAS TABLES AND CHAIRS THAT CAN BE MOVED IN AND OUT. I BELIEVE IT SEATS AROUND 277. WE DO NEED IT HERE IN CITRONELLE. CHATON, I BELIEVE RENTS THEIRS AROUND 300.00 DOLLARS PER DAY. BUT WHEN WE HAVE AN OPTION TO RENT A CHEAPER ONE,MUCH CHEAPER THAT IS HERE IN TOWN, WHICH WILL PEOPLE CHOOSE?.

Submitted By: Submitted: 10/13/2009
Some people are under the misconception that the civic center is going to be this big facility where you hold Mardi Gras balls or large concerts. It's not. It's a civic center. Most all towns have one. It's a NICE place large enough to hold wedding receptions, birthday and retirement parties, etc. We desperately need this in our town. Our tax dollars are leaving town and going to Satsuma and Chatom. When people need a nice place to hold these events, they have to rent down there. Most of the people who use the center will be those who live here. Needing more hotels here is not even an argument when it comes to the center. By the way, we have 2 motels in Citronelle.

Submitted By: Alicia Submitted: 9/22/2009

There is a time and a place for most everything, but city employees evidently need a little guidance about how that is supposed to work. To help them out, here are a few guidelines:

WRONG TIME- uniformed police officers playing games while on duty

WRONG PLACE- same uniformed officers playing in parking lot of local business being vandalized

JUST PLAIN WRONG- city employees driving city vehicle without seatbelt

EVEN MORE WRONG- same employees smoking in same vehicle when there is an ordinance against it

Folks, you can complain that you don’t get paid enough for the job you do, but you are overpaid to do these kinds of things.

If the people of Citronelle were as atuned what goes on in their city they would understand that City employees and entities are under pressure. I think each citizen that has a complaint on one or more entities should have to endure one shift with any of the employees to see the stress and strain they are under. This includes volunteer and paid departments. These jobs are not the easiest in the world, both physical and mental. Do not submit my name or email on the website.

I suppose the public forum should be called "the public gossip" section though. Let's continue to keep them (i.e. Mayor/City Council/Public Officials, etc) honest and keep Citronelle moving forward. We have roads in need of repaiar, dogs and cats roaming the streets, flooding issues, vacant buildings and other eyesores, the walking trail we have yet to add lighting to. This is only a small list of the things that need our attention. If some of these problems were dealt with in a timely fashion, the city would not have had to cancel the 4th of July celebration. I say focus on what we already have before taking on any new projects.

Citronelle is proposing a business license increase of 1/2% per year over the next 5 years. This is fiscal irresponsibility since: 1) It does not reach the goal of being equal to business license fees in other Alabama cities; 2) The revenue generated will be minimal (those paying $500 per year now will pay $512.50 AFTER 5 YEARS); 3) it does not keep up with the cost of living (COLA increases for Social Security have averaged about 3% per annum over the last 10 years); and 4) it ties the hands of the next administration since 2 of the years' increases will fall after the current administration is over. This is some "feel good" legislation which only looks good but does not really do anything, just like the animal control and beautification ordinances already on the books.

First, Sarah, it is NOT an invasion to record the pre-meetings of the council. Read up on the sunshine and open meetings law, and get back to me. The taxpayers have a RIGHT to know what their elected officials are doing, before, during and after council meetings!

Second, I loved the article a few weeks ago on Citronelle possibly hiring a dog catcher! I love my pets, but I am a responsible pet owner: my pets are spayed/neutered, and they are in the fence at ALL times. I feel so sorry for all the dead pets on the sides of the roads, and all the dogs wandering the neighborhoods, just waiting to get hit. People, keep your animals behind a fence, spay or neuter them, or DON'T HAVE THEM!!!
