MONTGOMERY — A team as good as No. 7-ranked Foley doesn’t need to be given any help or second chances but that’s exactly what Alma Bryant provided on Friday.

The Lions gave up too many turnovers and too many offensive rebounds and fell to a 62-51 defeat in the Class 7A South Regional girls semifinals at Garrett Coliseum.

Foley (25-3) outscored Bryant 21-12 off 14 turnovers and 24-7 on second-chance points off 24 offensive rebounds. But the Lions got plenty of high-percentage shots with 14 of its 23 field goals coming off layups.

“I told my girls offensively that we’re gonna have to push in transition, crash the boards and just try to get as many clean opportunities as possible,” Foley coach Shanece McKinney-Sims said.

Keiyonla Knight scored 24 points and Amiyah Carvin added 16 for the Lions, who led 11-0 and never trailed, although the Hurricanes (17-13) rallied to cut the lead to 28-22 by halftime.

Foley then opened the second half with a 12-0 run and Bryant got no closer than seven points after that.

Twins Mari-Marie Grayson (23 points) and Madi-Marie Grayson (19) combined for 42 of the Hurricanes’ 51 points and made 13 of the team’s 16 field goals.

“They are great shooters,” Sims said. “Some of the shots that they hit, my girls were like, ‘How can they do that?’ I promise you they practice those.”
