THEODORE — Theodore held Murphy to 42 yards of total offense and Kendrick Able ran for three touchdowns as the Bobcats beat the Panthers 31-0 Thursday night at C.A. Douglas Field.
Able, who ran just seven times for 58 yards, scored on runs of 25, 8, and 20 yards in one quarter, all coming off short fields. Noah Hernandez added a 32-yard field goal and quarterback Crishon Overton scored on a 4-yard run. Overton was also 4-of-6 passing for 89 yards as Theodore (5-2, 5-0 6A Region 1) stayed in the region lead with its eighth straight win over Murphy.
Bobcats coach Steve Mask began substituting in the second quarter as Theodore took a 31-0 halftime lead. With the Panthers (0-7, 0-5), coming off a 100-0 loss to Williamson last week, a running clock was used in the second half, unlike in the historic loss to the Lions.
“We’re 5-0 in the region and all the region games count,” Mask said. “We did what we needed to do. We came out with a purpose in what we needed to accomplish. Murphy was overmatched. It’s not because they’re not coached well and it’s not because they don’t try hard. We’re just older than they are and we’re a lot more talented than they are.”
The Panthers were held to 71 yards passing and minus-29 rushing. Quarterback Bo Carson was 6-of-15 passing and was intercepted twice. Elijah Allen had two receptions for 51 yards.
“We’ve been suiting up ninth and 10th graders and so we’ve got a lot of growing pains,” Murphy coach Sherman Williams said. “But we’re looking forward to what we have going on at Murphy High School. We’re going to get better. We’re going to keep working. We’re not going to give up and we’re going to keep coaching.”
