Sluggish Saraland extends streaks, Cottage Hill stays unbeaten, St. Paul’s, MGM, UMS-Wright victorious

Jamison Roberts accounted for a pair of scores to lead No. 2-ranked Class 6A Saraland to a 28-0 road win over Baldwin County Friday night.

Roberts completed 12 of 22 passes for 206 yards, tossing a 25-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Turner and a 17-yard strike to Deshawn Spencer. Spencer added a 42-yard scoring run on a reverse in the second half for the Spartans (6-0, 5-0 6A Region 1), who extended their regular-season winning streak to 26 games and have won 22 straight region games. They held the Tigers (0-6, 0-4) to 76 yards of total offense.

“We didn’t play with a lot of energy in the first half but really picked up the intensity and passion in the second half,” said Saraland coach Jeff Kelly, whocollected his 198th career victory.

P.J. Brown added a 4-yard TD run for the Spartans.

 

 

Cottage Hill 28,

T.R. Miller 14

 

Caleb Metzner posted four touchdowns as the visiting, No. 10-ranked Warriors rolled to a road win over the No. 5 Tigers.

Metzner scored on runs of 39 and 8 yards and receptions of 55 and 44 yards for Cottage Hill (6-0, 3-0 3A Region 1).

The Warriors produced 433 yards of total offense while holding Miller (5-2, 3-1) to 126 yards.

T.J. Hanson threw a 9-yard scoring pass to Marquiese English in the second quarter and Jayden Griffey returned a punt 70 yards for a score in the third quarter for the Tigers.

James Davis, Xykais Thomas and Cohen Perea each had interceptions for Cottage Hill, which also had four sacks.

Bryant 8

 

Kam Smith ran for 151 yards on 10 carries and a pair of touchdowns to lead the No. 4-ranked Vikings to a home romp.

Smith scored on runs of 10 and 8 yards, quarterback Jeremy Menhennett (10-of-12 passing, 141 yards) threw a 14-yard touchdown to D.J. Broughton (5 receptions, 110 yards), Devin Pettway scored on a 1-yard run, Marquiese Gould caught a 41-yard touchdown from Thaddeus Wilder and Shondell Harris blocked a punt that Dylan Lucas returned for a touchdown for Mary Montgomery (7-0, 4-0 7A Region 1).

The Hurricanes got a safety on a holding call against MGM in the end zone, making it 28-2 at halftime.

Quarterback Makai Vongsengphachanh scored on a 12-yard run in the fourth quarter for Bryant (2-4, 0-4).

 

St. Paul’s 27,

Gulf Shores 23

 

The Saints drove 80 yards over the final four minutes and Tank Jones scored on a 3-yard run with only 31 seconds left to beat the visiting Dolphins.

Hayden Fincher (8-of-21 passing, 120 yards) hit a leaping Jones for a one-handed, 21-yard touchdown grab in the opening quarter, Bo Ladner blocked a punt and Will Abrams returned it 4 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter and a second Ladner block set up Turner Antoon’s 36-yard field goal at the 1:56 mark of the quarter for St. Paul’s (5-1, 3-1 6A Region 1).

Antoon added a 38-yard field goal early in the third quarter for a 20-17 St. Paul’s lead, then Janoy Ferguson scored on a 14-yard run with 7:22 left to put Gulf Shores up 23-20.

 

UMS-Wright 34,

Citronelle 14

 

Max Fowler completed 12 of 19 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score in the Bulldogs’ home win.

Fowler scored on a 5-yard run while Perry Hand returned an interception 22 yards for a touchdown and recovered a blocked punt for another score. Haas Harvill caught a TD pass and Kingston Phan kicked field goals of 43 and 37 yards for UMS-Wright (4-2, 3-1 5A Region 1).

“It’s a fun game as a head coach when you can look out there and you’re making plays on every phase,” Bulldogs coach Sam Williams said. “I was super proud of the kids and the staff because we worked really hard on special teams.”

Ke’Markys Howard scored on a 2-yard run and Timothy Weaver added a 34-yard pick-six for the Wildcats (2-5, 1-3).
