MOBILE — Alabama State quarterback Damon Stewart completed 12 of 16 passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns as the Hornets got an early lead and made it stand up in a 17-6 win over Grambling in the inaugural Port City Classic at Ladd-Peebles Stadium Saturday night.
Both of Stewart’s touchdown passes were to Kisean Johnson as ASU improved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Johnson had seven receptions for 64 yards and Baylor Cannon added a 34-yard field goal for the Hornets.
Myles Crawley was 21-of-31 passing for 197 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions for the Tigers (4-5, 3-3). Chance Williams led the Tigers with 57 yards rushing on 12 carries.
After Isaiah Scott’s 90-yard return for a touchdown on the opening kickoff was negated by a hold, Alabama State chewed up nearly six minutes off the clock before Stewart hit Johnson on a 19-yard touchdown pass to give the Hornets a 7-0 lead.
Early in the second quarter, Stewart found Johnson for a 3-yard scoring pass after a Grambling fumble.
Neither team scored again until the fourth quarter, when Cannon’s 34-yard field goal stretched the lead to 17-0.
The Tigers scored with 12:04 left in the game when Crawley connected with Nae’Sean Dickerson on an 18-yard TD pass.
