Saraland-Montgomery Catholic game cancelled due to hurricane

By JIMMY WIGFIELD

Friday night’s football game between Montgomery Catholic and Saraland, both of which are ranked No. 1 in the state in their respective classes, has been cancelled due to risks caused by Hurricane Helene, the schools said Thursday.

The game was scheduled to be played at Spartan Stadium. The schools have been in constant contact with each other since Monday regarding Helene’s impact and the decision to cancel the game was mutual, according to Saraland City Schools Superintendent Dr. Brent Harrison and Montgomery Catholic President Justin Castanza.

The risk of uncontrolled circumstances negatively impacting preparation, travel and game play was too great for either team to risk, the schools said in a statement.

Helene was predicted to make landfall in the Big Bend area of Florida Thursday night but its effects could be felt in the Montgomery area and other parts of east and central Alabama as it moves north.

The game will not be made up this year since it is a non-region game. The teams are scheduled to play each other in 2025 in Saraland.

Class 6A Saraland has won 16 straight regular-season games and a state-best 28 straight at home. The defending Class 4A state champion Knights, who moved up to Class 5A this season, have won 39 straight regular-season games.
