Dixon scores 25 in McIntosh girls’ 49-41 upset of No. 4 Kinston in South Regional

Chauncey Dixon had 25 points and 11 rebounds and McIntosh’s girls closed with a 9-0 run over the final 2:40 of the game to upset No. 4-ranked Kinston 49-41 Tuesday in the Class 1A South Regional semifinals at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery.

Dixon made 9 of 17 field goals and 7 of 16 free throws as the No. 9 Demons (23-7) advanced to meet No. 6 Elba (18-2) in the regional finals Monday at 12:30 p.m. at Garrett Coliseum. The winner will go to the state tournament in Birmingham.

Kinston’s last lead was 35-34 with 7:24 remaining before Dixon had three layups and made two free throws down the stretch.

Jayla Brown added 13 points for McIntosh, which won despite shooting just 34% from the field. But the Demons forced 18 turnovers and outscored Kinston (26-2) 18-2 on points off turnovers and 17-6 off second-chance points, although Kinston outrebounded the Demons 41-34.

McIntosh led 21-17 at halftime and 31-30 going into the final period.
