MILLRY — Ke’Markys Howard rushed for 141 yards on 12 carries, including a pair of touchdowns, to lead Citronelle to a 35-0 romp over Millry Thursday night at A.D. Britton Stadium.

Howard, a senior, scored on runs of 29 and 39 yards as the Class 5A Wildcats opened the season with a decisive victory over the 1A Wildcats.

“Ke’Markys is a guy that we can line up all over the field and he’s gonna make plays,” Citronelle coach Jason Rowell said. “He showed what he can do tonight.”

The Wildcats also got TD runs of 55 yards from Kobe Weaver and 6 yards from quarterback Whyatt Nelson. Weaver rushed for 91 yards on five carries.

Citronelle’s defense and special teams came up with some big plays, including Weaver’s interception on the final play of the first half to make it 21-0. Kohen White’s second-quarter scoop-and-score on a blocked punt energized the Wildcats after a sluggish first quarter.

“We had first-game miscues and jitters but we got settled in and were able to make plays on both sides of the ball,” Rowell said.

Citronelle has won six straight regular-season games dating back to last season and is now 4-0 in August under Rowell, who is entering his third season.

The Wildcats’ season-opening shutout was their first since defeating McIntosh 71-0 in 2016.

Citronelle will host Orange Beach next Friday while Millry visits Washington County on Thursday.

“Obviously it feels good to be 1-0 but we have another challenge next week and I told them that we need to see improvement from this week to next,” Rowell said.

GROVE HILL — Flomaton rolled to a 17-0 season-opening win over Clarke County Thursday night in Jason Massey’s debut as the Bulldogs’ coach.

“We definitely have to improve offensively,” Massey said. “We couldn’t do anything and when we did start doing something we would shoot ourselves in the foot. We aren’t where we want to be offensively. I’m definitely proud of the effort our kids gave and they fought all the way through the end.”

The Hurricanes got touchdowns from receiver T.J. Hall in the first quarter, a first-half field goal and on Antwan Bowen’s 7-yard run in the third quarter.

Clarke County defensive back Jayvion James an interception.

The Bulldogs host Leroy on Aug. 29 at 7 p.m.
