McGill-Toolen edges St. Michael on final-second field goal; Vigor, UMS-Wright romp

Ollie Poiroux booted a 32-yard field goal as time expired to lift No. 2-ranked McGill-Toolen over St. Michael 20-17 Friday night.

The Cardinals tied the game at 17 following an 11-play drive that George Gounares capped with a 32-yard field goal with 6:23 remaining.

“We were setting up the kick the whole time on the last drive,” Yellow Jackets coach David Faulkner said. “We just wanted to keep running it and get him as close as we could.”

Sophomore Kevin Daughtry ran for 124 yards on nine carries, adding a 67-yard touchdown run for McGill-Toolen (3-1, 2-0 Class AA Region 1).

Nygel Mitchell rushed for 131 yards on 23 carries, including a 29-yard TD run, for St. Michael (0-3, 0-2), which continues to play without injured star quarterback Gunner Rivers.

“Our guys kept battling,” Cardinals coach Philip Rivers said. “We got down 10-0 and could said, ‘Oh, this too much’ but they fought their tails off and it’s tough when you don’t get the results you want.”

PRICHARD — Zy Wilson had a 26-yard touchdown reception and a 69-yard kickoff return that set up a touchdown pass as the No. 4-ranked Class 4A Wolves rebounded from an upset loss to Orange Beach by routing the visiting Wildcats.

Demetris Johnson added a touchdown run while Jhi Brown, playing quarterback in place of injured Anthony Gill, completed 5 of 8 passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns and Rashad Miles added a 72-yard pick-six for Vigor (3-1, 1-1 4A Region 1).

“We were excited for the opportunity to get back into the win column in a tough region,” Wolves coach Renardo Jackson said. “Citronelle came into the game undefeated and we knew they were going to be very physical and confident in what they do, so I was proud of the way the guys went out and played.”

Walker Lynch was 5-of-15 passing for only 24 yards while Javorious Coleman rushed 14 times for 86 yards and had an 11-yard touchdown run for Citronelle (2-1, 0-1).

“We know this is the toughest Class 4A region in the state without question and I’ll take that to my grave,” Wildcats coach Jason Rowell said. “We came into a hornet’s nest with those guys being suspended last week. Those guys who didn’t play last week are real difference makers.”

Among those were Wilson and several other key starters, including Jabarrius “Chicken” Garror, who were suspended for the Orange Beach game.

MOBILE — The Bulldogs scored on their first four possessions to build a 35-0 first-half lead at Ervin S. Cooper Stadium.

“We wanted to try to put it all together,” UMS-Wright coach Sam Williams said. “You want to play four-quarter games and I don’t think we’ve done that. This was a really good game and something we can build on.”

The Bulldogs (3-1, 2-0 Class AA Region 1) drove 80 yards in 11 plays on their opening possession, with Max Fowler (12-of-17 passing, 164 yards, three TDs) connecting with John Bloch on a 19-yard scoring reception.

Matthew Warren’s interception set up Fowler’s 21-yard TD pass to Ty Mabrey for a 14-0 first-quarter lead.

In the second quarter, Fowler scored on a 6-yard keeper and threw a 7-yard TD pass to Illijah Scott to make it 28-0.

Buddy Mostellar recovered a whiffed punt attempt in the end zone with 1:31 left in the opening half to make it 35-0.

Wills Reynolds, Mac Rigby and Mack Keaton recovered fumbles and Thomas Delong had an interception for UMS-Wright.
