PRICHARD — Jabarrius “Chicken” Garror broke the state sack record while Demetris Johnson rushed for 144 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns as No. 1-ranked Vigor routed Valley 37-7 in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs at Wolfpack Stadium Friday night.

Garror picked up his state-record sack with 4:25 left in the third quarter, giving him 64½for his career. The previous record of 63 set by Spanish Fort’s Cole McConathy from 2021-2023.

“It was really amazing,” said Garror, a Texas commit. “I was ready for it the whole game and I finally got it. It was great to get the sack. I’ve been thinking about it all day.”

Wolves coach Renardo Jackson said he and his staff didn’t put in a special plan to get Garror the record.

“We didn’t put a lot of thought into that,” Jackson said. “We just tried to put a game plan together and give us a chance to win. Chicken understood we’re just going to play the game and when the sack came, we would celebrate him and honor him.”

No. 2 Vigor (9-2) will host No. 7 Selma (10-1) in the second round.

Johnson’s touchdown runs covered 27 and 6 yards and Anthony Gill threw three touchdown passes — 36 yards to Skyler Roberson and 14 and 25 yards to Terrell Prince. Kamarcus Cobbs added a 6-yard TD run.

Jamison Roberts threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score as the host No. 4 Spartans exploded in the second half to win their Class 5A playoff opener.

The Oklahoma commit tossed three touchdown passes, including a 32-yard strike to Deuce Scott on Saraland’s first offensive play, plus an 11-yarder to Eddie Turner and a 20-yarder to Ayiden Pugh while adding a 2-yard TD run. Pugh also scored on a 5-yard run.

“Jamison did a great job of taking what the defense gave him,” said Spartans coach Jeff Kelly, who notched his 35th playoff victory at Saraland. “I think it was one of his best games this season.

Saraland (10-1) will visit No. 3 Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa (10-0) in the second round.

The Spartans scored 60 points for the fourth game this season, outscoring Pelham 33-7 in the second half.

“We gave up some things in the first half, we got the ball in the second and took control of the game with a physical opening drive,” Kelly said.

Highly recruited edge prospect Keoni Snipes had the big play Saraland’s defense with a 31-yard pick-six.
